During the day of October 24, 2009, a group of 6 people travelled to Weary Road in Evansville, WI. We were there to investigate a couple of legends associated with this road. For myself, as a member of this group, my goal is to explain experiences and evidence. I, myself, am not trying to prove (although it would be great if we could), disprove or ‘debunk’ any paranormal activity. My only goal is to provide information to allow others to make up their own minds.
Normally, when I go to a sight that has reported haunting and oddities, I ask myself “why is this place haunted?” When we left for Weary Road it was no different. I asked myself “why is Weary Road haunted?”
The road itself is just a very peaceful country road, dotted with a few farmhouses. Cornfields surround the majority of the road, with a small exception of a forest stand on the western portion of the road. This forest stand appears to be an old forest as it is very overgrown with many fallen older trees on its floor.
First I read about the reported paranormal happenings on this road:
- Phantom motorcycles, cars and trains have been witnessed by some: There are Chicago-Northwestern train tracks on the northwest portion of the road. If there was a phantom train, it wasn’t there when we were. There wasn’t much traffic on the road when we were there, however there was still some. There are also homes on this road, so traffic would be expected. Also, with the reputation Weary Road has, I imagine that some of the traffic on the road may also be curiosity seekers like ourselves.
- Dark figures walking across the road and following people and small creatures (Imps) living in the trees: I put these two together because I think they’re similar. There was no activity like this when we were there. It is, however, important to note that with all the cornfields, hedgerows and the forest stand on this road there is a lot of animal life present here.
- Green glow near the bridge: None in our group witnessed any green glows near the bridge. But, there is also nothing physical there that would cause a green glow, so if someone does see a green glow at the bridge they may want to investigate it further.
- Screams and inhuman sounds: Obviously I can’t say that this is what others were hearing when they were there, but we heard a lot of screeching birds in the forest stand while we were there.
- Scratches on bodies: No one in our group experienced scratches on their body.
- Mr. Weary appears in your rear view mirror: He didn’t appear to any of us this day.
- If you stop on the bridge and turn your car off, it won’t restart: A couple of us did this and both of our cars started right back up. Both cars are still working fine.
- Ghostly girl in the woods: We actually went a really good distance into the woods, until one of our members noticed a no trespassing sign (there are posted signs up around the area saying that it is private property but open to public fishing and hunting. There is even a posted parking area near the bridge). We didn’t witness any ghostly girl. There were a lot of pictures taken in these woods and no anomalies were visible in them. The forest stand is not a very large one and it is surrounded by cornfields.
Next come the legends of why this road may be haunted:
- One is that a kid was car surfing (standing on the roof of the car while someone was driving down the road) and they fell off the vehicle at the bridge and died. There is no record of this happening. There are also no records of vehicular deaths on this road.
- Another story says that a kid hung himself off the bridge. There is no record of a hanging from this bridge. Personally, I think it may be difficult because it is a short distance (of course I forgot to bring a method of measuring this) from the bottom of the bridge to the creek below it. I could be wrong though. The bridge itself is nondescript. It goes over irrigation ditches from the fields. There are a lot of satanic graffiti on the bridge and the road near it (ie. Redrum, pentagram, 666, and others) as well as some graffiti that isn’t fit for writing.
- There are also several stories and legends revolving around the Weary family which lived on the road named after them. One legend had a member of the family die in a house fire on this road. The members of the Weary family were farmers. They were reported to be good citizens of Evansville. No one died in a fire on this road.
On the metaphysical side, there were a couple sensitive’s with us and nobody felt anything out of the ordinary on this trip.
I can’t deny anyone else their experiences on Weary Road. I can just explain those experiences we had while our group visited.
